Black & White, a blended Scotch containing a high proportion of grain whiskies, was originally produced by the London-based James Buchanan’s company, one of the first that introduced the blended whiskies to the English market. Around 1885 Black & White was already famous and James Buchanan & Co. Ltd. had a contract to supply the House of Commons. The original name of the bottling was “House of Commons”, but almost immediately its nickname prevailed (“Black & White”, referring to the black Scottish Terrier and the white West Highland Terrier featuring on the brand's motif).
